Star Trek’s First Episode Wasn’t What The Show’s Creators Had Planned
By DEVIN MEENAN
The first produced "Star Trek" pilot, called "The Cage," was a subpar effort. NBC passed on it but let creator Gene Roddenberry take a second stab at the project.
"Star Trek" producers Robert Justman and Herb Solow gave insight on the series premiere selection in the behind-the-scenes book "Inside Star Trek: The Real Story."
NBC screened several "Star Trek" episodes to select the premiere. The proposed pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and four others were ruled out.
The premiere selection came down to "The Man Trap" and "The Naked Time." NBC chose the former because "The Man Trap" was essentially a creature picture on a TV budget.
