Star Trek: TNG’s Best Two-Parter Actually Has A Third Episode
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
After the gripping two-part episode “The Best of Both Worlds” in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” a third installment unfolds in the subsequent episode titled “Family.”
In the two-part episode, Captain Picard, portrayed by Patrick Stewart, is captured and undergoes assimilation by the all-consuming semi-mechanical beings known as the Borg.
Once freed from the Borg, Picard resumes command of the Enterprise. In the final shot, he wears the remnants of Borg implants on his face as he stares out of a window.
In “Family,” the Enterprise's senior staff takes a break following the Borg incident, temporarily stepping away to engage in quiet conversations with their closest relatives.
Picard decides to visit his brother Robert (Jeremy Kemp), who still tends to their family farm in the French countryside, which he chose after Picard departed for space travel.
Tensions rise between Picard and Robert, leading to a physical altercation. The brothers exchange punches and start heated arguments about their shared dislike for each other.
Recognizing that his anger isn't directed solely at Robert, Picard declares, “They [the Borg] took everything I was. They used me to kill and to destroy, and I couldn't stop them!”
Picard yearned to break free from his family farm in France, always gazing up at the stars. Years later, the very stars that once captivated him would inflict unimaginable pain.
