Star Trek: TNG Cut Much Bigger Plans For Lycia Naff’s Captain Gomez

While Ensign Sonya Gomez, played by Lycia Naff, only appeared in two episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the showrunners originally had big plans for her.
According to Naff's interview with StarTrek.com, Ensign Gomez was initially conceived as a potential long-term romantic love interest for Geordi La Forge, played by LeVar Burton.
She added, “Geordi was to fall so deeply in love with me that he'd risk his life to have eye surgery in order to see me. [...] Gomez was written comically and didn't match.”
Naff later reprised her role as Gomez in the “Star Trek: Lower Decks” episode “First First Contact.” Gomez has become the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Archimedes.
