In the Season 2 premiere of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Spock (Ethan Peck) and his command staff commandeer the ship while Captain Pike (Anson Mount) is away.
Spock and his Enterprise crew then intercept a distress signal from La'an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong) in Klingon territory and prevent a war with the Klingons from igniting.
Admiral Robert April (Adrian Holmes) lets Spock off with a warning, but the final scene reveals that the Admiral wasn’t just recognizing the crew's good work or being magnanimous.
The Starfleet actually needs all hands on deck because a Gorn attack ship was seen entering Federation space. The Gorn are a reptilian race that date back to the Original Series.
In the Original Series episode “Arena,” Captain Kirk (William Shatner) faced a Gorn captain. After being left out of past “Trek” iterations, “New Worlds” has spotlighted the Gorn.
The Gorn are savage raiders who reproduce like Xenomorphs (i.e. with living beings as incubators). La'an was once abducted in a Gorn raid and then rescued as a child.
Trekkies have never seen the Federation and the Gorn at war, but the Gorn were the villains of two Season 1 episodes, so further conflict with the Gorn makes sense.
