Star Trek Exec Thinks This Is Why Discovery Didn't Land With Fans
By VALERIE ETTENHOFER
Alex Kurtzman, co-showrunner of "Star Trek: Discovery" and head of "Trek" at Paramount+, believes the show's initial lukewarm reception was due to its unexpectedly dark tone.
Kurtzman added that "Season 1 of 'Discovery' was always intended to be a journey from darkness into light," reflecting the tumultuous socio-political climate of the U.S. in 2017.
Despite positive critical reviews, early audience feedback highlighted dissatisfaction with the show's bleak plot points, like the death of major characters and moral ambiguities.
Kurtzman added that "Season 1 of 'Discovery' was always intended to be a journey from darkness into light," reflecting the tumultuous socio-political climate of the U.S. in 2017.
While some fans appreciated this new direction, Kurtzman said others were "just stunned by something that felt darker than any 'Trek' had before."
In response to fan feedback, the series gradually incorporated familiar elements, such as Captain Pike and Spock, which contributed to the success of subsequent seasons.
