Stanley Kubrick Said Jack Nicholson Brought One 'Unactable Quality' To His Roles
By JOE ROBERTS
Despite the perception of Jack Nicholson as a playful rascal with a slightly sinister edge, the Oscar winner's entire career is a testament to his unique and varied acting talents. According to legendary director Stanley Kubrick, there's a simple reason for this.
As reported by the New York Times' Ron Rosenbaum, Kubrick, who directed the actor in “The Shining," has “said of Nicholson that he brings to a role the one unactable quality — great intelligence." Coming from a famously cerebral director of Kubrick's caliber, that means something.
Nicholson’s intelligence has granted him not only longevity but also a commitment to making films that, in his words, “move people.” That intelligence may lead to some unorthodox methods on set, but on the whole, Nicholson’s insightful approach to his craft has made for one of the greatest Hollywood careers.
