Solo: A Star Wars Story Used Ancient VFX Tech To Create The Kessel Run

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” answered many questions about Han Solo’s Kessel Run in a spectacular sequence created by visual effects supervisor Rob Bredow and his team.
Bredow told Vulture about all the contributing aspects to achieving this feat, including using one of the oldest special effects tricks used by filmmakers.
He said, “We wrapped an entire 180-degree screen around the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, and had multiple projectors throwing media onto that using rear projection.”
Along with some technology by Industrial Light & Magic, Bredow added, “When the actor pulls the level to go into hyperspace, they really see the stars bleeding out like that.”
Director of Photography Bradford Young spoke about using the old trick, saying, “One of the fun things that rear projection allowed was a fresh compositional element.”
Young continued, “The shot where Han first walks into the cockpit, with L3 and Lando sitting at the controls, you see Han’s face light up when they jump into hyperspace.”
