Shutting Down The Roseanne Revival Let John Goodman Light Up The Righteous Gemstones
BY BJ COLANGELO
The "Roseanne" revival series was canceled only a few days after it had premiered due to Roseanne Barr's racist tirade on Twitter, much to its audience’s dismay. However, the shutdown allowed John Goodman to join new projects without the "Roseanne" series taking up his time, including his role in HBO’s "The Righteous Gemstones."
The Gemstones are a family of wildly-successful televangelists, who aren't nearly as reverent as they would appear, with their religious personas covering up their deep sinfulness. John Goodman plays Eli Gemstone, the head of the Gemstone family, faced with the inevitability that the Gemstone empire will need to be passed down to one of his messy children.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Goodman stated that the offer from show creator Danny McBride came almost immediately after the "Roseanne" revival was canceled. "So I had nothing better to do,” he said. Goodman plays Eli Gemstone in a way that no one else could, and he wouldn’t have been able to take the role had “Roseanne” not been canceled.
