Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Opening Weekend Box Office Probably Killed The Franchise
By RYAN SCOTT
The sequel to one of DC’s most acclaimed movies, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” finally hit theaters on March 17, 2023, but it doesn’t seem as if there will be much celebrating this time — and the franchise may be doomed. The film took in $30.5 million on opening, far below the expected $40 million, and has raked in just $65.5 million globally against its believed budget of $125 million.
“Wonder Woman 1984” and “The Suicide Squad” had worse openings than “Fury of the Gods,” but both films were released at the height of the pandemic. Although the movie has generally had rough reviews, the bigger issue might be caused by Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans to reboot the DC Universe, possibly leaving fans disinterested in a film that’s part of a dead continuity.
Following “Fury of the Gods” at the box office is “Scream VI,” which fell 60.6% in its second weekend with $17.5 million, and “Creed III” at $15.3 million in its third weekend. Rounding out the top five were “65” at $5.8 million, a film that hasn’t done as well as Sony hoped but could see an increase with its Chinese release, and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” with $4.07 million.
