'Septic Tanks' Inspired A Major Part Of Denis Villeneuve's Dune
By JOE ROBERTS
While making "Dune," director Denis Villeneuve and his team aimed to stay faithful to Frank Herbert's original novel while drawing inspiration from various unconventional sources.
For instance, when creating the world of Giedi Prime, the home planet of the villainous House Harkonnen, production designer Patrice Vermette drew inspiration from septic tanks.
During a drive outside Montreal, Vermette encountered a field full of black plastic septic tanks and had an epiphany moment, noticing their intriguing shapes.
Vermette saw these tanks' shapes and textures as fitting representations of Giedi Prime, a planet characterized by over-exploitation and dominated by industrial waste.
This vision aligned with Villeneuve's concept of Giedi Prime as a world with a "black molded plastic" look, incorporating elements of brutalism and post-modernism.
