Sarah Snook Had A Hard Time Acting Out Shiv’s Wavering Love For Tom

Season 4 of “Succession.”
Shiv and Tom’s relationship in “Succession” is complex, to say the least, with the only daughter of the Roy family telling her husband, “I may not love you, but I do love you.”
While Shiv has said many terrible things to Tom over the series, this line was difficult for actress Sarah Snook to deliver, who commented, “It’s like, well, which is it?”
Her character’s true feelings are so suppressed that it was hard for Snook to understand what she means at first, rhetorically asking, “Is it she does or doesn’t?”
Snook said, “I think it’s both. I think it’s, she has such an inability to deal with what vulnerability means, to be in love and to be in sort of a positional space of ‘weakness.’”
The line’s harshness wasn’t Snook’s only challenge, sharing, “Oftentimes, we find ourselves laughing at the end of a take because what we’ve said to each other is so cruel.”
Shiv’s constant barrage of insults may be to avoid feeling vulnerable, with Snook adding, “I think she does [love Tom] but it’s the thing that she can’t possibly relinquish into.”
