Robert Picardo Tried To Stop Star Trek: Voyager’s Plans For The Doctor
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
For the first few seasons, “Star Trek: Voyager’s” EMH (Robert Picardo) was snippy and impatient, having been programmed to respond only to emergencies and confined to the sickbay.
Thanks to a time machine and the wrangling of 29th-century technology, the Doctor was given a small device he wore on his arm to project his hologram anywhere he wanted to go.
This, however, wasn't a wrinkle that Picardo approved of. In 2022, the actor spoke to StarTrek.com and revealed that he preferred the Doctor's physical limitations.
Picardo felt that if he could walk anywhere, nothing would make the character unique and he would essentially be just another human on a human-dominated starship.
