Robert Downey Jr. Sneakily Used Queue Cards For His Iron Man Lines
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
The first “Iron Man” is loaded with great scenes, but the scene that helps introduce Tony Stark to the audience is his speech during the missile presentation in Afghanistan.
In true corporate fashion, Tony gave a speech about the power of his new products, intoning, “Is it better to be feared or respected? I say: why not both?”
However, in a video interview with Vanity Fair, the actor revealed that the speech was printed on cue cards, allowing him to give the scene an improvised feel.
To hide that he was reading cue cards, Downey, Jr. wore a pair of sunglasses. It was a practical choice and the glasses became a permanent part of Tony's look.
Given how massively over-orchestrated the MCU would become, it's astonishing to think that “Iron Man” involved an element of winging it.
