Robert Downey Jr. Didn’t Want To Deliver One Of Avengers: Endgame’s Best Lines

When Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man deals the death blow to Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame,” he reprises his identity-revealing line from 2008’s “Iron Man” by saying, “I am Iron Man.”
According to “Endgame” director Joe Russo on the CinemaBlend podcast, Downey didn't want to say the line, and it took a famous Hollywood bigwig to change the actor’s mind.
The CinemaBlend article noted that the scene where Iron Man delivers the fatal shot to Thanos in “Endgame” was a reshoot, and it might’ve been the last scene filmed for the movie.
Downey's objections to saying “I am Iron Man” had less to do with the line itself and more to do with the fact that he was completely exhausted and didn’t want to reshoot.
Russo pitched Downey the line within earshot of legendary producer Joel Silver (“Predator” and “Die Hard”), and Silver implored Downey to repeat the 11-year-old line.
Russo said, “I had dinner with [Downey] [...] before we were supposed to shoot it. And he was like, ‘[...] I don't really want to go back and get into that emotional state.’”
Russo added, “Joel Silver [...] was at the dinner. He's an old buddy of Robert's. [...] He's like, ‘Robert [...] That's the greatest line I've ever heard! You gotta say this line!”
