Ridley Scott Doesn’t Think Joaquin Phoenix Was The Villain In Gladiator

In an insightful discussion about his film "Gladiator," director Ridley Scott shared his unconventional perspective on the character of Commodus, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix.
Contrary to popular belief, Scott does not view Commodus as the true villain of the story. Instead, he views him as a tragic, sympathetic figure, largely shaped by
"I saw him as the most sympathetic character of all, in 'Gladiator.' He was a product of neglect, total neglect of a father that he adored." Scott told Deadline in an interview.
In Scott's view, this neglect, especially Marcus's decision not to make Commodus the prince of Rome, is the root cause of the character's actions and eventual downfall.
He suggests that the real villain of "Gladiator" is Marcus Aurelius, whose poor treatment of his son inadvertently creates the circumstances that lead to the film's tragic events.
