Richard Linklater's Follow-Up To Dazed And Confused Was A Decade In The Making
By ERNESTO VALENZUELA
Although Richard Linklater is known for taking his time on projects, viewers are able to understand the passage of time and its effects on people when watching his films. His classic 1993 high school coming-of-age film set in 1976, “Dazed and Confused,” eventually received a spiritual sequel that was a decade in the making: 2016’s “Everybody Wants Some!!”
The two films aren’t directly related, but clear narrative threads connect the high schoolers in “Dazed and Confused” with the 1980 college students in “Everybody Wants Some!!” The director said, “I’ve been trying to make [“Everybody”] for about ten years. I had that idea in ‘02 and ‘03. I just wanted to make this college movie about what it was like to be the newness.”
“Everybody” took some time to develop as Linklater was working on “Boyhood,” a massive 12-year project that shot for a few weeks annually. The same narrative threads also connect “Boyhood” to his other films, with the director adding, “It’s always been that story, but ‘Boyhood’ ended up touching it. Where ‘Boyhood’ ends, ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ begins.”
