Rebecca Romijn Insisted On Wearing a Starfleet Dress On Strange
New Worlds
By JACOB HALL
Rebecca Romijn’s Una Chin-Riley, better known as Number One, pays homage to the original “Star Trek” in both her character and looks. She is a tough leader and military commander much like Majel Barrett’s Number One, and wears the same feminine-style Starfleet dress that was made famous by Nichelle Nichols; however, the idea to combine these two sides was Romijn’s.
Romijn said that she was initially inspired by the hair and the nails of the females on the original show and then requested the Starfleet dress to be a part of the wardrobe. The show producers originally said that everyone would just be wearing pants and tops and then changed their minds so that every “Strange New Worlds” character would have a wardrobe of multiple uniforms.
However, Romijn wanted to make sure that she would be wearing a dress in her action scenes as well so that it “goes into action [turning it] into a badass Starfleet dress, so it's not just like a flight attendant standing around on the enterprise." In having Number One wear her long hair down, paint her nails, and wear a minidress while calling the shots, Romijn is subverting the trope of the “badass” woman in sci-fi who is usually portrayed with masculine overtones.
