Quentin Tarantino’s Favorite Revenge Movie Is A Dark Follow-Up To Top Gun
By BILL BRIA
Although it took 36 years for a “Top Gun” sequel to be made, in 1990 a pseudo-follow up called “Revenge” was filmed by “Top Gun’s” director, Tony Scott.
“Revenge” stars Madeleine Stowe as the wife of a Mexican crime (Anthony Quinn), whose affair with the crime lord's friend, Jay (Kevin Costner), lands them in deep trouble.
Jay is also a U.S. Navy aviator, and the film (along with its advertising, in a way) makes him into a dark version of the "Top Gun" hero, Maverick.
Sub-textually, Scott criticizes the Maverick archetype, creating a gritty and emotionally harrowing revenge flick. Quentin Tarantino considers it the director’s best work.
Scott ended up directing 1993’s “True Romance,” which was written by Tarantino. In a 2003 interview, Tarantino said he was a huge fan of “Revenge.”
“In fact, that was the reason I was supportive and really tried to make it happen that Tony directed True Romance,” Tarantino said.
