Playing Pre-Ragnarok Thor Made Chris Hemsworth Feel Like ‘Dying’
By MICHAEL BOYLE
While “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Love and Thunder” had a stranger and more comical tone, Chris Hemsworth’s previous two films as the Asgardian Avenger were generic and bland.
The first movie's approach to humanizing the god Thor and bringing him into the Avengers was good, but having him live on Earth severely limited the stories the writers could tell.
According to the book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,” Hemsworth pleaded to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, “I’m dying here. I feel like I have handcuffs on.”
Luckily, Feige was on the same page. "Ragnarok" rebooted Thor, introducing new characters and locations unlike anything seen in the MCU.
“Ragnarok” had many silly moments, but the film could be dark when needed. The third film challenged Thor and saw him suffering losses, such as his home of Asgard.
By removing the character and story from Earth, director Taika Waititi could raise the stakes and take Thor in a more enjoyable, surprising direction.
