Planes, Trains, And Automobiles Cut Steve Martin’s Favorite Scene
By SANDY SCHAEFER
John Hughes' beloved 1987 comedy "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" has become a Thanksgiving fixture for many, starring Steve Martin as Neal Page and John Candy as Del Griffith.
Martin shared with The Guardian that there was one scene between him and Candy he wished Hughes had left in its original scripted form.
At the end of the film, Neal discovers Del's wife died eight years ago and that he's alone. The film cuts to Neal taking Del home to spend Thanksgiving with him and his family.
Hughes originally wrote and shot additional dialogue, with Del opening up about his life on the road, never having children, and saying that the holidays are tough for him.
Martin shared, "There was such beauty in it and I never understood why John [Hughes] trimmed that scene." Unfortunately, the scene has never been widely available to the public.
