Patrick Stewart Wrote 20 Years Of Star Trek History Between TNG & Picard
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
"Star Trek: Picard" saw the return of the “Next Generation” captain in a new series after some time had passed in the continuity — a full 20 years after the events of “Nemesis.”
While little of what occurred during the two decades has been revealed, Jean-Luc Picard actor Patrick Stewart explained that he had to fill in the time gap more or less on his own.
Stewart shared, “To create that past — which I assume will never, ever be known — was very intimate, and it influenced me when we began shooting 'Picard.'”
He continued, “I knew he had needs, longings, desires that were not being fulfilled. Disappointment that things had not gone the way he had hoped. Loneliness.”
The audience learns in Season 3 that Picard had an ill-fated affair with Beverly Crusher and a long-lost son, which fits well with Stewart’s ideas for his character.
Looking back, Stewart realized Picard was more miserable than he wanted, adding, “That wasn't my intention, but that was what was being communicated. Anxiety, stress, irritation.”
