Ozzy Osbourne Played A Very 'Ozzy' Role In Kylie Minogue's Moulin Rouge Cameo
By BEN F. SILVERIO
Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film “Moulin Rouge” can be classified as a jukebox musical that takes multiple popular songs from artists like Dolly Parton and Elton John, then blends them into medleys and remixes to fit the film’s narrative. Luhrmann took inspiration from many sources to create his work, but most unexpectedly is the mashup of music legends Kylie Minogue and Ozzy Osbourne.
After taking absinthe for the first time, Ewan McGregor’s character sees the Green Fairy (Minogue), a Tinkerbell-like figure who sings an operatic version of the title track from “The Sound of Music.” As the scene ends, Minogue’s sparkly sprite eyes begin to glow red, and Osbourne’s “Crazy Train”-esque scream comes from the fairy’s mouth.
Osbourne’s role in the scene, however, was meant to be longer, as Luhrmann explained in an email to writer Gavin Edwards: “At one stage I had a much more complicated sequence where the innocent Green Fairy metamorphoses into its darker demonic alter-ego.” Although they recorded his vocals, Luhrmann cut Osbourne’s part from the sequence to only the scream.
