One Star Wars: Episode V Scene Secretly Used Potatoes As Props
By DANIELLE RYAN
Potatoes. You can boil 'em, mash 'em, fry ‘em, or even use them as props in the sequel to one of the most successful films of all time, “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.”
In “The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Enhanced Edition)” by J. W. Rinzler, it was leaked that the crew used everyone’s favorite tuber as celestial bodies in space.
Just when they believe they’ve escaped into a cave, they've actually flown into the mouth of a giant creature. They zoom back out into the massive, terrifying potato asteroid field.
Visual Effects artist Kenneth Ralston stated, “We had to shoot [...] asteroids flying everywhere [...] for laughs, we went out and bought a bunch of potatoes at the local store.”
Ralston continued to explain the potatoes: “We stuck those on rods and we started shooting potatoes, but [...] No one ever knew, but if you know where to look, they're hilarious.”
