The show's characters, like the viewers, have to listen to their captain, which stresses Jones out as an actor. He told Trek News he had only expected to play a supporting role.
"I was intimidated by the responsibility and the gravity of it," Jones said. He added that Sonequa Martin-Green still leads, but "to be a captain was a daunting responsibility."
Jones noted it took a lot for his character to overcome a biological fear, and he could relate to Saru's bravery. As Saru grew more confident, Jones said it taught him a lot.
