One Scrapped Watchmen Script Used Superman In A Surprisingly Dark Way
By SANDY SCHAEFER
Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" production history is long and convoluted, with several directors coming and going throughout its development.
Things didn't pan out with Paul Greengrass, but he worked long enough on the script with co-writer David Hayter to give us an idea of what he might have done with the property.
On the "Script Apart" podcast, Hayter described the opening of Greengrass' iteration as an example of how much it differed from Snyder's "Watchmen."
Like the comic book, the film would have opened with Edward Blake/The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) being chucked out of his apartment's window by a mysterious attacker.
Hayter said Greengrass wanted to "subvert everyone's expectations on the first image" by having Eddie Blake flying like Superman and "BOOM, he's plummeting off of this building."
