One Scene In David Lynch’s Dune Deeply Frustrated Kyle MacLachlan
By MICHAEL BOYLE
When he was filming the better-than-you've-heard 1984 adaptation of "Dune," actor Kyle MacLachlan played the young Paul Atreides, who is forced to kill the Fremen hothead Jamis.
The scene was a problem for MacLachlan as he couldn't cry on demand. Pressure mounted as hundreds of people watched him try to perform a significant moment in the film.
The crew gave MacLachlan a menthol tear stick to apply lightly under his eyes. However, as he grew frustrated, he rubbed his eyes, getting the menthol in them instead.
The menthol did make MacLachlan cry, but not the right kind of tears. He completed the scene, but ultimately, the sequence was cut for time — and he was happy to see it go.
