One Line Completely Stumped Mark Hamill In His Star Wars Screen Test
By JEREMY SMITH
In a 2018 conversation with Frank Oz at New York City's 92nd Street Y, Mark Hamill recalled auditioning. He said the dialogue stumped him as an actor and almost cost him the role.
The line was, "I doubt the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust, and what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault!"
Hamill recalls being confused about "these two BS names for planets that George [Lucas] made up," and whether it was a dramatic scene or similar to a Mel Brooks parody.
On the day of the audition, the actor made the mistake of asking director George Lucas if the scene was meant to be humorous. "You could see him, like, physically recoil," Hamill said.
Hamill said Lucas told him, "Uh, well, let's just do it and we'll talk about it later," but said that meant "just do it and we'll never talk about it. Ever again."
