Nicole Kidman Has Gotten Too Powerful In Saturday Night Live's AMC Theatres Parody
By DEVIN MEENAN
During screenings at AMC Theatres, there's a one minute ad featuring Nicole Kidman entering an AMC theater and describing the magic of movies: "Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this." The ad, so sincere it’s funny, has become a popular meme, even appearing as a parody on the Season 48 premiere of “Saturday Night Live.”
SNL cast member Chloe Fineman plays Kidman, dressed in the same gray pantsuit with the identical strawberry blonde updo. One of the most noticeable parts of the ad is how Kidman uses her natural Australian accent, even though she's spent decades in Hollywood perfecting an American one, and Fineman puts on an exaggerated, "Crocodile Dundee" accent to reflect this.
The sketch starts out a near shot for shot recreation as “Kidman” narrates while fellow moviegoer (Kenan Thompson) sits next to her, yet when she makes eye contact, he switches seats. The movie begins, the Kidman ad itself begins to play while theater-goers stand and salute the screen, chanting, "Heartbreak feels good in a place like this" over and over.
