New Studio Ghibli Movie From Hayao Miyazaki Opening Summer 2023
By SANDY SCHAEFER
Legendary Japanese animation filmmaker and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has once again come out of retirement to direct the upcoming film, “How Do You Live?” The new animated movie is said to be loosely based on Yoshino Genzaburō’s 1937 novel of the same name, a coming-of-age drama that centers on a 15-year-old boy grappling with life’s mysteries and hardships.
Miyazaki indicated that “How Do You Live?” will be closer to a grand-scale fantasy than a YA drama. The film sounds like a fitting swan song for the animator, who shared, “I am making this movie because I do not have the answer [to the film’s title].” Studio Ghibli confirmed that the film will hit theaters in Japan on July 14, 2023, but didn’t reveal dates for the international release.
Along with their announcement message on Twitter, Studio Ghibli shared an image of a fantastical bird-like creature from the film. This news comes at a busy time for Studio Ghibli as it recently opened a theme park based on its creations and dropped the animated short “Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies” for the three-year anniversary of “The Mandalorian.”
