Nearly None Of The Script’s Dialogue Made It Into Star Trek’s Miri
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
In the “Star Trek” episode “Miri” (October 27, 1966), the Enterprise happens upon a distant planet whose geography, by mysterious coincidence, appears to mirror that of Earth.
However, the episode’s teleplay wasn’t cogent, containing far too many bad ideas, and was even banned in England for many years.
The teleplay was credited to writer Adrien Spies, and Trekkies have learned that only 20% of his script made it into the episode.
One of the more notable elements in Spies’ original script was a featured romance between Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Yeoman Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney).
In the early days of “Star Trek,” Kirk and Rand had many scenes together, and some viewers thought the two characters may be developing romantic chemistry.
If this element of the script stuck, fans would have gotten their wish and Rand would have gotten an excellent speech about how she was thinking of leaving the Enterprise.
