Natasha Lyonne's Detective Superpower In Poker Face Posed A Challenge For Rian Johnson
By BJ COLANGELO
Rian Johnson’s upcoming puzzle-of-the-week mystery series for Peacock, “Poker Face,” stars Natasha Lyonne as the accidental detective Charlie Cale, who has the ability to tell when someone’s lying. While this skill would give any sleuth a distinct edge when solving crimes, it also poses a unique challenge for those trying to write a mystery show centered on an incredibly effective character.
Johnson shared, “It presented an interesting obstruction in the writing process: how is it not over in the first five minutes of talking to the person.” However, as Johnson explained, the show’s mystery focuses more on the reason for the lie, adding, “[Charlie] gives this monologue in the pilot about how people are constantly lying. You have to pay attention to why the person is lying about that specific thing.”
This challenge may have been a blessing in disguise, as Johnson said, “The fact that with each new episode we can attack a totally different style and story and cast ... it’s something similar to the mystery movies with Daniel [Craig].” “Poker Face” will premiere exclusively on Peacock with four episodes at once, followed by the remaining six to stream every Thursday starting on January 26, 2023.
