April 1, 2023 episode of
“Saturday Night Live.”
Despite being on the air for almost 50 years, the April 1, 2023 episode of “Saturday Night Live” was only the second episode ever to broadcast on April Fool’s Day. With the high mischief day falling on a Saturday only once every seven years, Weekend Update anchor Michael Che took advantage of the rare occasion to play an April Fool’s Day prank on co-anchor Colin Jost.
Che secretly told the audience not to laugh at Jost's jokes during the Weekend Update segment. A small smattering of laughter during Jost’s jokes made the prank subtle and harder for Jost to figure out. The joke became more apparent when it was Che's turn to deliver jokes as the audience erupted, only for Jost to get the laugh equivalent of a golf clap during his turns.
Once Che revealed to Jost that it was a prank, Jost admitted, “[I thought], ‘am I not mic'd?’ And then I was like, ‘Oh, I just suck.’” It took Jost a while to recover from the betrayal, interrupting Che's segments with laments of “you're evil” and “that's the meanest thing you've ever done to me.” Comedy lovers will appreciate just how deliciously cruel Che's April Fool's Day prank was.
