Michael Cera's Barbie Character Is A Truly Unexpected Easter Egg
By ANDREW HOUSMAN
A new series of posters for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Barbie” movie reveals just how vast the ensemble of stars joining Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling actually is.
These actors take on the different versions of Barbie and Ken within Mattel’s line, but one obscure reference that’s shown is Michael Cera’s character, Allan, a discontinued doll.
Introduced in 1964 as Ken’s friend, Allan is seen in the “Barbie” trailer wearing the same rainbow-striped sweater from his debut, watching the Ken’s fight about “beaching off.”
His poster appears alongside the Ken variations with the tagline, “There’s only one Allan.” This Easter egg seems to be for those with an in-depth knowledge of Barbie history.
After being discontinued in 1966, Allan would return in the 1990s and early 2000s married to a simpler Barbie variation named Midge, who became pregnant in 2002.
However, this became controversial as some believed Midge was promoting teenage pregnancy. As an extra joke for Barbie fans, the trailer appears to show a pregnant Midge.
