Matthew Perry’s Dating Struggles Inspired One Of Friends’ Funniest Moments
By DREW TINNIN
Before Season 1 of “Friends,” the show’s creators asked Matthew Perry during a lunch to reveal “something interesting about you, so maybe we can incorporate it into the show.”
In David Wild’s book “Friends 'til the End: The Official Celebration of All Ten Years,” Perry recalled that lunch, noting, “I remember I wasn't doing very well dating at the time.”
When Perry mentioned he recently had a bad date to the creators, the experience ended up in Season 1, Episode 4 of the show, entitled “The One with George Stephanopoulos.”
“I had just been on a date the previous night. I got home, I called my friend and he said, 'How did the date go?' And I said, ‘I'm going to die alone!’” recalled Perry.
That line, “I'm going to die alone!,” became a signature Chandler moment. As Perry said, “[F]our episodes into ‘Friends,’ Chandler said that, and then we just kept going that way.”
When Chandler said, “I'm going to die alone!,” the audience hadn't quite fallen in love with the character yet. His dialogue, however, changed that, and the rest is history.
