M*A*S*H’s Author Had A Big Problem With Hawkeye (And The Entire Show)
By DANIELLE RYAN
Author Richard Hornberger wrote "MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors" after his experiences as a surgeon in the Korean War. The book inspired the movie and series "M*A*S*H."
In an interview with Newsweek, Hornberger once said that the series "tramples on my memories." His real disdain was for the show's version of Hawkeye and the man who played him.
In his obituary, his son William said his "father was a political conservative, and he did not like the liberal tendencies that Alan Alda portrayed Hawkeye Pierce as having."
He said his dad's novel wasn't anti-war; "It was a humorous account of his work, with serious parts thrown in," he said, calling the work "difficult and challenging."
