M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense Cost A Disney Exec His Job

M. Night Shyamalan’s spec script for "The Sixth Sense" was so good that David Vogel, the president of Disney at the time, took one look and immediately bought it for $2.25 million.
Shyamalan attached a stipulation to the purchase that he would also be allowed to direct the film. Vogel agreed without corporate approval.
Previously, Vogel had the freedom to approve his own film projects but due to Disney structure changes, he had to get several levels of approvals before taking such action.
Vogel was at peace with the script, so he figured it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission. Shortly thereafter, Vogel was fired.
