Liam Neeson Completely ‘Lost It’ His First Day Filming Schindler’s List
By DANIELLE RYAN
Steven Spielberg’s 1993 “Schindler’s List” follows the true story of a German industrialist and businessman who helped save the lives of refugees from the Holocaust.
While the film offers hope due to Schindler’s efforts, it’s a brutal look at the reality many faced — a reality that became clear to Liam Neeson before he filmed his first scene.
Neeson told The Hollywood Reporter filming began at the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he spoke with Branko Lustig, one of the film’s co-producers and a Holocaust survivor.
The actor shared, “Branko casually pointed to a hut and said, ‘See that hut there, second from the left?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘That’s where I was.’ F***, I just lost it.”
Neeson continued, “Two years he spent there. I remember my knees weakened, and I thought, ‘You’ve got to pull yourself together, man. This isn’t acting in just another movie.’”
