Kurt Russell's Lost In Space Role, Explained

In the 1965 “Lost In Space” episode "The Challenge," Dr. Smith and Will Robinson are camping on Priplanus when they encounter a stern, spear-wielding alien teenager named Quano.
Quano, played by Kurt Russell, explains that Priplanus is the site of his species' coming-of-age resting rituals. Quano must engage in combat to prove himself.
Naturally, Quano and Will would have to fight one another given their ages, but Quano is poised to murder Will in combat.
Dr. Smith overhears Quano's father, called the Ruler, admit that if Will can defeat Quano, then he will kill the Robinson family so there are no witnesses of the shameful act.
