Kathy Bates Joining The Waterboy Took Some Convincing From Her Niece, Not The Devil
By J. GABRIEL WARE
Kathy Bates is best known for her Academy Award-winning role in the psychological thriller “Misery.” However, the Oscar winner is also very capable of bringing on the laughs, which she wonderfully displayed in her portrayal of Helen, the “Mama” of Adam Sandler’s Bobby Boucher, in “The Waterboy.“
During a 2019 interview, Bates said she initially turned down the role and threw the script in the thrash. Kathy Bates's niece spotted the script sitting in the trash and when she found out it was a script for an Adam Sandler movie, “she just exploded,” Bates explained.
Bates' niece went on to tell her about Sandler’s work on “SNL” and told Bates she had no choice but to do the movie. Luckily, Bates gave the script a second read, because as she recounts, “it turned out to be one of the most wonderful experiences of my whole life. I felt so free, I could do anything."
