Joss Whedon Never Had A Real Plan For Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Cheese Man
By JAMIE GERBER
As the creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Joss Whedon was known for his careful planning, with many major plotlines throughout the show being plotted years in advance. Because of this, one of the show’s most enigmatic characters, the Cheese Man, has been debated and attributed meaning, but Whedon says the Cheese Man wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously.
Throughout Season 4, the Scooby Gang had many dreams that contain vital messages that come up in later episodes, so when each member of the gang had a dream of the Cheese Man — who says “I wear the cheese. It does not wear me.” — fans paid attention. Yet when asked about the character, Whedon said " The Cheese Man: meaningless.”
Whedon said he needed something “that was meaningless because there is always something in the dream that just doesn't make any sense at all. In this case, it was the Cheese Man. He confounds everybody because of that, and people ascribe him meaning.” Some fans refuse to listen to Whedon and continue to debate the Cheese Man.
