Joss Whedon Blames One Man For Making The Buffy Movie 'Fall Apart'
By BJ COLANGELO
While the TV version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is a beloved, highly influential series, its prior movie entry was highly disliked even by its writer and creator, Joss Whedon.
Whedon hated many aspects of the film, but the creator placed most of the movie’s failure on the shoulders of one of the film’s lead performers — Donald Sutherland.
In a 2003 interview with IGN, Whedon explained that the director failed to control Sutherland and changed the dialogue for him. This wasn’t the only time Whedon shared his opinion.
In a 2001 interview with The A.V. Club, he said about Sutherland, "He was just a prick [...] He would rewrite all his dialogue, and the director would let him."
Whedon added, "He had a very bad attitude. He was incredibly rude to the director, he was rude to everyone around him, he was just a real pain."
The creator blamed Sutherland for ruining his vision with the changes he wanted for his character, saying the actor’s ideas were “actually destroying the movie.”
