Joseph Gordon-Levitt Wasn’t Sold on 10 Things I Hate About You At First
By CHRISTIAN GAINEY
Joseph Gordon-Levitt started acting professionally at the tender age of 7, appearing in popular shows like "Family Ties," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Quantum Leap.” However, the young actor had loftier goals and wanted to do serious films, so when he was offered the chance to read for the teen rom-com “10 Things I Hate About You,” he had to be convinced.
Despite being based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” Gordon-Levitt was not impressed with the movie. As he explained, “When I was that age, I was going to art house cinemas and watching movies coming from Sundance… That’s what I wanted to do,” so “10 Things I Hate About You” wasn't exactly a dream come true for the young actor.
Gordon-Levitt ended up getting the part of the lovesick new kid, Cameron, and while he loved the time he spent working on the film, he isn’t exactly proud of it. Gordon-Levitt revealed, “I know this sounds weird to say... I was always a little embarrassed [of the film],” but he acknowledges that he has the tendency to be a “self-serious, snobby, little brat” about his art.
