Pop star Rina Sawayama got to become an action star in a bona fide, kick-ass blockbuster as Akira in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” and her music landed her the role in a roundabout way.
Speaking to BuzzFeed, “John Wick 4” director Chad Stahelski explained how he arbitrarily came across Sawayama’s music, which led to casting her as Akira remarkably fast.
Stahelski shared, “Late one night in Berlin, I was just going through YouTube and I just literally typed in ‘Japanese pop star,’ I swear to God. There was a music video
He continued, “I just thought she had a really interesting look. The way she moved and how her face changed in different angles, there was something about her I just really dug.”
The filmmaker’s stumbling upon Sawayama was serendipitous, as he added, “A day later we had her on a Zoom call going, ‘Hey, how would you like to be in a ‘John Wick’ movie?’”
The casting proved to be fruitful as Sawayama absolutely held her own in some truly ridiculous action sequences from the premiere action franchise in modern Hollywood.
