Episode 6 of “The Last of Us” sees Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) sharing a moment, where they talk about what they’d like to do in the future if the cure works. Ellie expresses her interest in space, and Joel later reveals that he wanted to be a singer as a kid. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann explained these ideas came from the characters’ original voice actors.
During the production of “The Last of Us” video game, Druckmann became close with actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson and wanted to imbue their personalities into their respective characters in the game. Druckmann revealed, “Ashley loves space, and astronauts, and knows everything about it,” while Joel’s dreams of being a singer reflected Baker’s career as a musician.
Ellie’s fascination with space is taken from a heartwarming scene between the duo in the second game and was brought to the show to flesh out the characters further. Both voice actors will make cameo appearances in the series, with Johnson playing Ellie’s mother and Baker being seen in the trailers as a member of David’s crew in the winter chapter of the story.
