J.J. Abrams Has One Regret About Eric Bana’s Star Trek Villain
By WITNEY SEIBOLD
Looking back on the 2009 reboot of “Star Trek,” director J.J. Abrams said he had only one regret, which was related to the characterization of Eric Bana’s Romulan villain, Nero.
Abrams wishes he had provided Bana with more depth in the role of Nero because the character came across as more of a pulpy caricature than a nuanced and angry individual.
Abrams discussed the issue in detail in “The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams,” by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross.
He stated, “I wish we had given Eric Bana a bit more to do other than be full of rage.” Instead, his dialogue consists of cliche villain phrases like “I want Spock dead now!”
In spite of Abrams’ expressed regret, Bana has conveyed a positive experience from his involvement as Nero in “Star Trek” and holds no regrets regarding his role in the film.
