Jenna Ortega And Christina Ricci Had An Unspoken Rule On The Set Of Wednesday
By SHAE SENNETT
Tim Burton’s “Wednesday” is the latest Addams family installment, and while Burton updates the family, he pays homage to their previous iterations. Burton even cast Christina Ricci as Ms. Thornhill in his series, but although Ricci played Wednesday in the 1991 Addams family film, she and her successor, Jenna Ortega, never talked about the character.
According to Ortega, she and Ricci never talked about Wednesday. Ortega explained, “It was weird, it was like an unspoken agreement that we had. When we first locked eyes, we were just, ‘Let’s never talk about her.’ I don’t think I’ve ever really said the word, ‘Wednesday,’ around her actually until a couple of weeks ago.”
Although they never talked about Wednesday, Ricci’s presence and previous performance shaped Ortega’s character. Ortega admitted, “It was scary, because it’s like, she’s observing what it is, what you’re doing […] she’s created quite the legacy to live up to. And the show is very reminiscent of her take […] there’s respect there.”
