Jeff Goldblum Made The Fly A Once In-A-Lifetime Role For Geena Davis
By DREW TINNIN
Geena Davis may be remembered for “Tootsie,” “The Accidental Tourist,” “Beetlejuice,” and “A League of Their Own,” but her most powerful performance might come from David Cronenberg’s “The Fly.” In fact, Davis’ performance in “The Fly” is so convincing partially because she and co-star Jeff Goldblum were dating while filming.
Jeff Goldblum recommended her for the role in "The Fly," and although the casting directors were hesitant to cast a couple, as Davis recalled, "I auditioned and they said, ‘Okay.’” Davis called it a once-in-a-lifetime experience because,” I was acting with my actual real-life partner and so we just lived and breathed that movie.”
While working together may have helped Davis and Goldblum get into character, surely Davis must have regretted the decision when filming the scene when Goldblum vomits up acid and rip his own face off. However, Davis had only nice things to say, calling Cronenberg “collaborative and supportive,” and the film “a fabulous experience.”
