Issa Rae’s Spider-Woman Looks Freaking Cool In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
By MIYAKO PLEINES
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was wildly successful with unique animation and a shift from merely focusing on Peter Parker to exploring Miles Morales, the first Black web-slinger. The film introduced a multiverse of Spider-People, and based on the trailer of its sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” many more have emerged like Spider-Woman.
The trailer is filled with several visual teases, but perhaps the character who stands out the most from what has been shown is the marvelous Spider-Woman, voiced by Issa Rae. Spider-Woman bursts onto the screen atop a fiery motorcycle, crashing through the barrier between universes to battle a Leonardo da Vinci-inspired Vulture.
The heroine, whose real name is Jessica Drew, has a long comic book history that dates all the way back to the ’70s, but “Across the Spider-Verse” has decided to depict this version of Spider-Woman as a pregnant Black woman. The motorcycle-outfitted Spider-Woman variant will make her debut alongside the other Spider-People on June 2, 2023.
