Is Venom 3 Finally Bringing The Series Into The MCU?
By JEREMY MATHAI
The official trailer for "Venom 3" directly acknowledges Marvel’s multiverse, but the hints and teases included in the new footage make it unclear if "Venom" is joining the MCU.
In the mid-credits sequence of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," the film brought Eddie Brock and Venom into the MCU before sending them back to their own universe.
This was a result of Spider-Man setting things right again, but by focusing on the drop of symbiote goo left behind, it appeared that Sony might bring Venom into the MCU.
"Venom 3" returns to that exact same tropical bar frequented by Eddie and Venom, but with a mysterious new character seen snatching the symbiote sample for suspicious reasons.
The new character is played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, an actor who has appeared in multiple MCU films, so his inclusion in "Venom: The Last Dance" inevitably raises a few eyebrows.
Since these movies are at least broadly connected to the larger MCU, this might be an intentional casting choice to tie things together more tightly, but it’s currently unclear.
The unnamed individual played by Ejiofor shares little in common with Ejiofor's Baron Mordo, who most recently appeared in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness."
Assuming these are completely different characters who happen to look like Ejiofor, rather than a multiverse variant of Mordo himself, this only adds to an already confusing mess.
The trailer footage also shows Eddie, wearing the same Hawaiian shirt that he wears in the "Spider-Man: No Way Home" scene, hitching a ride with some hippies in a grungy van.
The hippie who’s serenading Eddie with his guitar is played by Rhys Ifans, the same actor who played Curt Connors/The Lizard in 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man."
Last seen in "Spider-Man: No Way Home," Connors was sent back to his normal universe, but the oddly prominent shot of Ifans in the trailer implies he’s reprising the role again.
Whether "Venom 3" resolves any of these concerns, or avoids resolving them altogether, fans can find out when the film arrives in theaters on October 25, 2024.
