Indiana Jones 5’s Director Finally Explains That Wild Ending
By RAFAEL MOTAMAYOR
Indiana Jones returned after 15 years for his final adventure in “Dial of Destiny,” with a grand finale that saw the heroes traveling to the Siege of Syracuse in 212 BC.
The ending included Roman siege weapons shooting down a Nazi plane, believing it to be a dragon, and Indy meeting the architect of the time-traveling plan, Archimedes.
Director James Mangold spoke with io9 about the film’s ending. He explained how Indiana’s age was critical to the story, making him a hero from a bygone era.
Mangold shared, “When we did start writing, it was my theory that at first that we would end up back in Nazi Germany in 1938.” However, the director decided against this idea.
As the audience expected to return to the beginning, Mangold explained he wanted something “more shocking, something bolder, and something that also affected Indy.”
Mangold instead brought the hero to Ancient Greece. According to the director, Indy would face “bigger questions about his own life and what he studied all his life.”
The result is a poignant send-off for Indiana. This ending is about him facing a personal challenge rather than the villain getting punished.
